Chris Cairns Coaching Sessions
Last weekend, Nelson Cricket had the opportunity to have ex-international cricketer, Chris Cairns, attend and deliver small group training sessions with selected players. The players were within 5 specific groups; U15 Boys, U15 Girls, Open Women, U17 Boys, and the Emerging Players group.
With the cricket season looming, the players were eager to engage in the sessions and absorb as much knowledge as they can from Cairns with his experience having featured in 62 Tests and 215 ODIs for New Zealand.
Throughout the sessions, players worked on the finer details of batting, bowling, and fielding as they look to refine their games ready for the 2024-25 season.
“It was a real pleasure to converse with Chris Cairns and learn from someone of his calibre.” said Brad Norris, Nelson’s U17 Boys head coach.
“Chris’ experience as a highly successful international allrounder meant he was able to offer unique insights across all facets that go into high performance cricket-from technical bowling and batting skills to mental skills.” added Kate Gaging, Nelson Nyxons / CD Hinds player.
With groups limited to 5 players, and focused on pace bowling all-rounders, it ensured that all players in attendance were able to take away something from the 2-hour long sessions.
“With an emphasis on faster bowling all-rounders in the province, who better to mentor them than NZ’s best ever all-round cricketer” add Garry MacDonald, renowned local coach.
The feedback received during the sessions, and following the sessions has been overwhelmingly positive. The players who had the opportunity to attend have all been able to take something away and assist with their games heading into the new season.
“Chris’ wise words were inspiring and helpful to all players.” said Carl Quinn.
It is always exciting when players and coaches have the opportunity to learn and advance their game, and even more so when you see how engaged they are with the opportunity.
Bring on the cricket season!
