The Nelson Pine Griffins have a rich and successful cricket history in Nelson. Today, the Griffins compete in the Hawke Cup, a national competition between all District Associations. Nelson holds the record for the longest period, defending the cup for a 28-match streak (1958-1965).

The Griffins also compete in the Chapple Cup - an annual men’s tournament contested in the white-ball formats; the quest for the inter-District silverware typically brings all eight Central District Associations together over three days to crown the season's champion.

In addition to these competitions, the Griffins fiercely battle Marlborough for the historic Newman Shield (one-day format) and the recently established Garry McDonald Trophy (two-day format).
