Griffins Hawke Cup Result

Disappointing Performance by Nelson Pine Griffins

Nelson Pine Griffins were completely outclassed by Canterbury Country in their Zone Three Hawke Cup preliminary round match at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora over the weekend. Although there were moments of hope, most notably when the home team were three wickets down for just 15 runs, Nelson were chasing the game throughout.

Put in to bat first, Nelson made a disastrous start losing their first six wickets for a paltry 15 runs.

While Josh Simpson fought hard for over an hour, wickets continued to fall to the accurate attack.  Opening bowlers Fraser Sheat and Jed Roberts menaced the visitors and picked up nine of the wickets between them.

In reply Canterbury Country were soon in similar trouble as Josh Newport and Jarrod Mckay both picked up early wickets. Tim Gruitjers and Harry Chamberlain however calmed the home team nerves down as they steadied the ship.  Both begun slowly but then gradually took control.  Chamberlain was superb in his 197-delivery innings which included 11 boundaries and one six.  The bowlers stuck to their task well however and Newport was well rewarded for his 19 over stint.

Facing a 160 run deficit Nelson fared a little better in their second innings.  David Zohrab produced a tidy captains knock as he fought hard in an attempt to save the game.  When he was sixth out with the total still on 87 there was not too much chance after that.  Sheat completed a fine game and finished with match figures of 10/38 off 29 overs.

Nelson Pine Griffins next two zone matches are in the New Year and they will be hoping for better results against Buller and Marlborough.
